Day 6

Today we had a leisurely drive about 20 kms out of Narrabri to the CSIRO Australia Telescope. There are six, 22 meter dish antennas arrayed here to form the most advanced radio telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Each antenna can listen to space individually, or they can be moved into position along a broad-gauge railway track to operate as one 6 kilometer wide telescope. They can also be linked to the one at Parkes to become an observation device measuring more than 300 kms in diameter. That's pretty impressive.

From there we went to Yarrie Lake. This is a saucer shaped lake, approximately 3kms diameter and only 2 meters deep in centre when full. It's believed to have formed by the impact of a meteor.

Lining the roads around Narrabri are lots of sunflowers, obviously grown from seeds fallen from trucks as the seed is transported.

It's been very windy here the last 2 days. At least it is probably keeping the temperature down a bit. It was very windy at the lake this morning, and the nights have been particularly windy. There's been a few storms around each day but have gone around us. I'm not looking forward to being in the caravan during a storm. This afternoon the wind changed direction all of a sudden, coming from the direction of the storm and it became quite cold. Then finally the wind has died down for the first time in 2 days.
